This match had an early start because the new Tannadice floodlights weren't fully operational and United made quick work of ensuring an easy passage into the next round of the competition. Just five minutes were on the clock when a fine move down the left opened up the way for Grant Johnson to take a Paddy Connolly short ball in his stride before shooting low past Davidson. The Second Division side played some neat enough football, but soon found themselves engulfed in a torrent of first half goals. Paddy Connolly stabbed in the second after a Grant Johnson shot had come-back off the post.
Two minutes later Billy McKinlay was on hand to knock in the loose ball after Davidson had saved Alex Cleland's header. The rapid scoring rate continued when Paddy Connolly ensured that John O'Neil's already net bound shot went over the line.
Perhaps not surprisingly, United were a wee bit more sluggish in the second period, but did extend the winning margin late in the second half. Grant Johnson netted from a Maurice Malpas cutback with 11 minutes remaining and Victor Ferreyra completed the scoring with a shot which sneaked just inside the post after John O'Neil had created the opening.
