After Extra-time our cup record against Rangers is, to say the least, poor, but this was a very close contest and strangely there was little evidence of a titanic battle in prospect at the end of an opening 45 minutes that was by and large an insipid affair. True Ian Ferguson had hit the base of the post, but other than that the half had been devoid of incident.
Not so in the second half. Within three minutes of the restart John Clark lost possession to Huistra who immediately played the ball through to Ally McCoist who turned quickly and curled a shot past Alan Main. Rangers lead was intact for only seven minutes. Paddy Connolly was impeded out on the right. Freddy van der Hoorn sent over a cross with a flat trajectory from which Victor Ferreyra stretched to head the ball into the far corner. Robertson crashed a shot off the underside of the bar before Rangers went back in front when former United defender Richard Gough rose above every one else to head in a Huistra corner. As United strove for an equaliser John Clark was pushed forward and this move paid off when he laid Allan Preston's cross into Paddy Connolly's path and his shot on the turn was well out of Goram's reach.
In the last few minutes of normal time, United looked the more likely side to snatch victory, but the tie headed into extra-time. Ultimately, the tie was decided by a goal four minutes into over-time. Peter Huistra broke clear on the left to rifle in a left foot shot which beat Alan Main and thus Rangers retain the quite incredible record of never having lost a cup tie to United.
