Having completed a clean sweep against the Bairns the previous season, we extended that run, though this had to go down as one of our poorer early season performances. By the interval, Falkirk could legitimately claim to have had the better scoring opportunities, particularly when Drinkell sent an overhead kick just over.
The visitors paid a heavy price for those first half failings as they saw United go ahead almost immediately on the resumption of play in the second half. Brian Welsh won possession from Cadette and the ball ran to John O'Neil. His cross from the left was met by Duncan Ferguson whose looping header dropped in at the far post. After Paddy Connolly had replaced Victor Ferreyra with 20 minutes remaining, we touched upon the form which had been the hallmark of our early season play and eight minutes from the end Paddy Connolly sped on to Freddy van der Hoorn's chip and glided a cross into the middle which Duncan Ferguson slid into the net. With results elsewhere going our way, United headed the Premier table for the first time since November 1990. For Falkirk this defeat sent them to the foot of the division and left the Bairns without a win in almost 20 years at Tannadice.
