With Paul Sturrock ruled out after a re-occurrence of a back injury picked up against Celtic a week ago, John Reilly made his third start of the season, and Ian Gibson took his place on the subs bench. Richard Gough and John Holt both made the starting line-up, which had looked doubtful in the days before this rearranged match that had been postponed during the awful weather in January.
Ralph Milne put United ahead after 70 minutes with a superb volley from a Reilly cross and it looked as though the single goal would be enough for both points. But Morton, with a man-of-the-match performance from Andy Ritchie, fought back to grab a point with only three minutes to go. Jimmy Rooney got the credit but his shot took a deflection before beating goalkeeper Hamish McAlpine for the equaliser.
The draw took United up to fifth place and within a point of fourth placed St Mirren, but the Paisley side now had two games in hand over the Tannadice side.
