After St Mirren's defeat to Aberdeen in midweek, United just needed a point in their final league game of the season at Firhill to clinch fourth place and the UEFA Cup qualification that came with it. Thistle on the other hand, needed a victory and goal difference to swing in their favour to avoid relegation. Former Thistle midfielder Ian Gibson came in for John Holt, the only change from the team that defeated Celtic.
Against a stiff breeze United soon went ahead with a great goal. A searching Gibson pass sent Ralph Milne clear on the right and his low cross was hammered past Alan Rough by the dangerous Paul Sturrock. Jags equalised when a looping McDonald cross was headed home by Donald Park, the smallest man on the park.
United resumed with Reilly on for Davie Dodds who had taken a knock and it was the young substitute got the winner. Gibson again supplied the ammo with a cute lob forward and John Reilly ran on to blast the ball past the helpless Scotland 'keeper.
With the Premier Division schedule now complete, United had finished three points above St Mirren to gain a UEFA Cup spot along with Rangers. Celtic won the title with victory over St Mirren, with Aberdeen finishing just two points behind. Partick Thistle joined Airdrie in the drop to the First Division.
