United's resources up front were stretched for this encounter with both Duncan Ferguson and Victor Ferreyra suspended, so in came Christian Dailly for his first match of the season. However, it was defensive frailties which led to the Tangerines slumping to their heaviest ever home defeat in a Premier Division match. Rangers were in belligerent mood right from the off and it was no surprise when they went ahead through Trevor Steven's header into the far post after just 15 minutes play. Immediately after the goal, Dave Narey limped off with a hip strain and our troubles mounted seven minutes later when Peter Huistra scored from close range. Our best spell of the match was immediately before and after half time, but even when Paddy Connolly did escape the clutches of the Rangers' defence he shot wide of the target.
Two goals in as many minutes and both with more than a tinge of good fortune finally completed a miserable afternoon. First the ball broke to Ally McCoist following a fine save by Alan Main, who was undoubtedly our star performer despite the scoreline, but he couldn't prevent McCoist scoring at the second attempt. Further gloom descended when Peter Huistra's angled drive took a deflection off Freddy van der Hoorn to deceive Alan Main and sneak home in the far comer. "We'd struggle against a bad side defending the way we did," remarked Manager Jim McLean afterwards and as everyone knows Rangers are far from being a bad side!
