Match Report

We gained only our second League win of the season, and though it took an act of charity by the visitors to create our first goal, we should have been ahead by the interval. Alan Irvine senior, restored to the side, and Gordon McLeod, making his first appearance of the season, were both prominent. A cross from Alan Irvine was dropped by Marshall at lain Ferguson's feet, but the 'keeper recovered to block his shot. Almost immediately Gilmour shot straight at Billy Thomson. Gordon McLeod did likewise at the other end. Just before the interval a shot by John Clark rebounded from the post.

On the restart we had a penalty claim turned down when Paul Sturrock appeared to be pushed. However, a minute later the United striker was on target with a curious goal. Burgess casually knocked a free-kick back towards his 'keeper straight to Paul Sturrock who gratefully rounded Marshall and netted. In the 61st minute Paul was on target again. Following a clearance off the line by Conn, Alan Irvine sent the ball back into the middle and Paul Sturrock picked his spot from Paul Hegarty's knock down. Shots rained in on the Falkirk goal with Marshall keeping out efforts from Paul Sturrock, John Clark and lain Ferguson. Falkirk then retaliated and Nicol's header bounced off the post into Billy Thomson's arms. Two minutes from time, we sealed our victory with a third, Ian McPhee set Gordon McLeod free and the youngster scored his first goal for the club, steering the ball inside Marshall's left-hand post.
