Our first visit to East End Park for twelve and a half years brought us a point, but in truth, this is a game we should have won, as we dominated play for long spells. A bright start augured well as we peppered the Pars goal with shots. Alan Irvine Snr and lain Ferguson were in the thick of the action, but it was Paul Kinnaird who came closest to scoring in those early stages. An early ball from lain Ferguson sent Paul clearly and his chip almost scraped the top of the bar. Dunfermline, with Billy Kirkwood and John Holt in their ranks, came more into the match and Billy Thomson did well to tip over a Robertson long range effort. The same player then hit a thunderous free-kick, which Billy Thomson parried and Bobby Smith, following up, blasted wide. As the interval drew close, we regained the upper hand though rarely looked like piercing the Pars defence.
The pattern of play was similar in the second half, United domination but few chances. Certainly Alan Irvine spurned a scoring opportunity following a free-kick. Fortunately Eric Ferguson, their substitute, did likewise, shooting straight at Billy Thomson from a good position. In the closing stages, we threw everything into attack. Paul Hegarty headed wide and a cross from Gary McGinnis somehow evaded the combined efforts of three United attackers as the ball slipped past the post.
