Match Report

Apart from the result itself, this was a highly satisfying evening. The three youngsters drafted into the side — Brian Welsh, Harry Curran and Allan Preston — all played significant parts in winning an obviously potentially difficult match given Falkirks desperation for the points.

The Bairns started off at a frantic pace as you'd expect. There was an early escape for us when Kevin McAllister, on loan from Chelsea, saw his shot saved by Thomson's leg and Stewart's follow up effort-cleared off the line by Dave Bowman. A goal wasn't long delayed however. Crawford Bapties's shot was deflected into Kevin McAllister's path and he drove a low shot under Billy Thomson to give Falkirk a 16th minute lead. On a gluepot surface we quickly came back into the match and Hamish French did well to get in a shot but Marshall saved comfortably. There was little the big Falkirk keeper could do about our equaliser in the 25th minute. A foul on Gallacher on the left earned us a free-kick and debutant Allan Preston's perfectly flighted cross was bulletted past Marshall by the head of Brian Welsh. Shortly afterwards a Curran cross was sidefooted past by skipper Maurice Malpas, who was operating in midfield.

Our domination of the match continued in the second half, though McAllister continued to prove a threat, especially when Thomson again saved with his legs from the on loan striker. Harry Curran headed straight at Marshall from another fine cross from Allan Preston and we had a strong penalty claim turned down when Kevin Gallacher went down in the box. Seven minutes from time Kevin Gallacher hit low, and first time, past Marshall into the far corner to end the scoring in a fine contest.
