Another disappointing performance as Hearts extended their unbeaten run against us to seven matches. The score was a repeat of Hearts last visit in the last game of last season, but this time it was Hearts who had the greater share of the play. Eamonn Bannon had a fine game in midfield for Hearts, but Iain Ferguson was largely eclipsed by his former defensive colleagues. Hearts ought to have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Colquhoun intercepted a Maurice Malpas pass-back. His cut-back found Eamonn Bannon but a timely block by Alex Cleland kept our goal in tact. From the corner Billy Thomson pulled off the first of several excellent saves when he turned McPherson's header round the post. Over half an hour had gone before we posed our first real attacking threat. A fine run by Kevin Gallacher and pass from Ian Redford set up the chance for Hamish French, but his shot was too high. Hamish French then hit a low grounder which Smith saved as the first half drew to a close.
There was even less goalmouth action after the interval. Dave McPherson headed past when it looked easier to score and then a deceptive cross from Eamonn Bannon came off the face of the bar. With just under ten minutes left, Miodrag Krivokapic, operating in midfield, blasted in a 30 yard shot, which Smith turned round the post.
