Morton made just one change from their last game, while Dundee United brought in Gillespie for Gordon. Both teams wore black armbands and upheld a minutes silence in tribute to former player Jimmy Gourlay who died this week.
This game ground to halt within seconds of started due to a hand injury to McKay after going for a low ball near the foot of the post. Once the play did get up and running it was the home side who did all the running. It was no surprise when the took the lead after just 11 minutes. Clark swung in a low cross that first evaded Mason but then landed at the feet of Ernie Hannigan who smashed the ball past McKay. The provider had his own chance to score soon after but Clark failed to test McKay with a weak shot. Traynor had the only chance for United in the first half.
United went all out for an equaliser in the second half and thought they had scored when Henry's shot looked destined for the net. Unfortunately for him, it struck the left hand post and rebounded to safety. After Cameron also hit the foot of the post, Billy Osborne doubled the Morton lead with a header from a Hannigan cross. This knocked the stuffing out of United and when Ernie Hannigan added a third the game was over.
