Broomfield wasn't exactly a happy hunting ground for United in those days and when the home side took the lead it looked as though the Airdrie hoodoo was to strike once more. That goal came after 17 minutes when Drew Busby cracked the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
None-the-less the remainder of the opening half belonged to totally United whose midfield efforts should have brought an equaliser, but a lack of punch up front proved United's undoing.

Airdrie's bright start to the second half was quickly dampened when United equalised. Davie Wilson's quick break to the bye-line ended with his cross being easily nodded home by Alan Gordon in the 50th minute. A couple of minutes later and the lanky centre was on target again. Alan Gordon found himself unmarked he had all the time in the world to crash the ball in off the underside of the bar. That quick one-two floored the hosts as United chalked up their first success at Broomfield for 41 years.
