Plenty at stake in this concluding match of the season - United required two points to keep alive hopes of a UEFA Cup spot, whilst the home side were desperate for victory to keep their top grade status. At the end either side were happy with the outcome. Despite having 90% of the play, Saints could rightly feel aggrieved at leaving the field trailing. That came in the 28th minute when Alan Gordon's head connected with a cross from Andy Rolland.
Facing a fighting Saints, United were pegged back to equality by the 51st minute when McLeod won possession before going on to slip the ball past Hamish McAlpine. A minute later and United found themselves in arrears. Miller hooked in a shot from the edge of the box to sensationally put Saints in front. The Tannadice eleven were all at sea at this point, but regained their composure and went close on several occasions, but Connaghan in the Paisley goal proved a stumbling block as saints secured a victory which in the final analysis was only a consolation as results elsewhere left the Love Street men needing to win at Parkhead in their final game, whilst United had to make do with entry to the Texaco Cup after finishing in sixth place as Dundee pipped them for the outstanding European place.
