Match Report

United arrived at Love Street having only scored four goals in the previous five league games. With a return match with Standard Liege looming in midweek, United were desperate to find their scoring touch and gain some much needed points. Paul Sturrock was still missing for the away side due to injury. Addison came in for Holt who picked up a leg strain in training. Payne was on from the start and Fleming dropped out.

Love Street was bathed in sunshine as the match kicked off and almost immediately a tough tackle from Smith on McGarvey resulted in a free-kick mid-way inside the United half. Fitzpatrick took aim, but the ball soared past the post. In the seventh minute, a terrible throw out from McAlpine led to Saints' opening goal. Abercrombie picked up the ball outside the box. He slipped it in to Jimmy Bone who drove it past the despairing 'keeper at the second attempt. Minutes later Kirkwood, with only the 'keeper to beat, shot timidly into Thomson's arms. United were struggling to keep out the eager home forwards but on 16 minutes, they broke away and equalised. With the linesman's flag raised, Addison ran forward and slipped the ball into Davie Dodds who tapped it into the empty net. Despite vehement protests from the Buddies, the goal stood. United went ahead in the 33rd minute. Payne crossed low into the box and Narey's flick was blocked as he shot. Luckily for United the ball spun into the air and Dave Narey got the better of a goal mouth scramble and poked the ball home. Narey was causing all sorts of problems now and he was felled right on the edge of the box, but the free-kick was wasted.

McGarvey was first to threaten in the second half but his fierce shot hit the side netting. He then broke free from Narey only to lob the ball past the post. At the other end Walter Smith went close when his 30 yarder forced Thomson to smother. Hegarty was pushing further forward and at times was camped in the Saints' half. In the 57th minutes a Robinson corner was headed goalwards by Hegarty. From a couple of yards out, Billy Kirkwood flicked the ball over the diving 'keeper and United were in full control. In the 71st minute with St Mirren pushing to get back into the game, Abercrombie headed over the bar from only three yards out. Walter Smith then picked up a booking for delaying the play while setting up a defensive wall. With five minutes left, Beckett dribbled through the United defence and fired a shot which looked to be going in, but McAlpine pulled off a magnificent save.
