Morton had been a thorn in United's side so far this season but it was an attacking side that turned up at Cappielow, with Jim McLean hoping they could get one over the Ton. United sat on top of the league going into this one.
For a quarter of an hour United were outstanding and Morton struggled to get any toe hold in the game. After just 6 minutes, United took full advantage of their possession. Striker Davie Dodds slammed home a well taken goal to put the visitors in front. However, after the early onslaught, Morton began to gradually work their way back into the match. The home side were showing grit and determination to get to the second balls and United were dropping deeper and deeper into their own half.
It was all Morton in the second half but they just could not pierce what was a strong and steady defensive set up. Paul Hegarty and Dave Narey looked assured as the dealt with everything Morton could muster. That resilience was finally broken when John McNeil grasped the lucky break of the ball to smack in the equaliser. It put the scent of victory into the Morton nostrils and they went after another with remarkable gusto. As they have done often enough this season, they left it pretty late. The home fans erupted when George Anderson crashed in their second. Then with United committing men forward, Morton struck again with just two minutes left. This time it was Jim Tolmie on target for the home side. The result put Morton fourth in the table and it was their second 3-1 over United this season. Jim McLean was disappointed with the latest set back stating, "Each team got what they deserved."
