Jim McLean produced a small surprise when he dropped full back Andrew Rolland. Joe White took over in the defence and Jackie Copland returned to the right wing. There was a decidedly eerie atmosphere in Tannadice with only 3,000 people in attendance.
United almost scored in the first minute when a long through ball by Gray was back headed towards the net by Copland. Hunter managed to divert it over the bar to the relief of his Killie team mates. However, in the 7th minute the visitors took a shock lead.McAlpine pushed out a cross but only as far as Gilmour who struck for goal. Cameron stopped it on the line but Ross Mathie was on hand to bundle the ball into the net. United pushed hard to get back into the game and their efforts were rewarded when Tommy Traynor hit a shot in off the post after 37 minutes.
Killie pushed United back in the second half and Eddie Morrison forced McAlpine into a save soon after the interval. Eddie Morrison then was rewarded for his perseverance when he scored in the 56th minute with a shot that entered the net via Jim Cameron. United huffed and puffed for the remainder of the game but were unable to snatch an equaliser.
