Managerless Hearts, with John Hargart in charge prior to his appointment later on a permanent basis, found United in no mood to be charitable.

The Tynecastle side struggled from the 55th second of the game when Doug Houston sent the Tannadice men into the lead. Former Hearts servant Tommy Traynor made it 2-0 with just four minutes of the first half remaining, a goal which previewed what was to come as the little winger proceeded to take his ex-teammates to pieces during the second period.

Tommy Traynor completed his hat-trick as Hearts collapsed and Andy Gray chipped in with another to complete a nap hand for Jim McLean's side. The game furthered United's record of not having had a goal scored against them at home in four outings.
