With their places in the new Premier League and the following season's UEFA Cup assured. United played host to Morton in their final home game of the term, aiming at yet anotherachievement. Fourth top spot in the table was beckoning — United's highest-ever placement — and a win over the Greenock side was essential to gain it. This they did, but not in the manner hoped for by the fans on the Tannadice terracing who had come to expect a high rate of consistency from their favourites all season.
Sad to say the home performance was a disappointing one, although to be fair Roy Baines in the Morton goal had a lot to do with United's failure to cash in further on their domination. The 'keeper foiled all the home attempts until right on the interval whistle when Paul Sturrock accepted a Gray cross to nod home what turned out to be the game's only highlight.
