At that stage of the season, talk of relegation for the Tannadice men was doing the rounds in football circles, with Jim McLean's side having not won since the first day of November, 1975. And things got much worse when Motherwell inflicted what United's biggest Premier defeat to date.
Bang in form Wiiiie Pettigrew was the man who engineered United's downfall downfall when he scored his 21st goal of the term from close range. But United struck back hanks to a Jackie Copland volley and things started to look good again for the home side when a Hegarty header rebounded off the woodwork and several other close occurred in the 'Well goal area. Then the roof fell in! Bobby Watson hammered in and four minutes later Bobby Graham added another. And to complete an afternoon misery for United fans Peter Marinello powered in Motherwell's final blow.
