Issues at both top and bottom of the Premier League were at stake before this match got under way. Rangers needed three points to clinch the Premier League title whilst victory for United would alleviate most of their relegation fears. Matters turned out perfectly for the Ibrox men and none too happily for those with Tannadice leanings. Within 22 seconds the Light Blues had taken the lead when, ironically, Dundonian Derek Johnstone was the scorer, latching on to a poor Jacky Copland clearance. The Tangerines went all out for an equaliser and McCloy pulled off a magnificent save at Hall's feet and, immediately on the restart McAdam scooped the ball just over after McCloy dropped an in-swinging corner, but still no joy for United.
There was to be no breakthrough for United before the end so apprehension over relegation still shrouded Tannadice. By contrast the visiting support was celebrating a title victory after hearing that Celtic had been beaten by Ayr United at Parkhead. That Ayr result was hardly to United's liking, leaving Jim McLean's men second from bottom.
