As expected Gordon McQueen's side fought all the way, but we carried too much fire power which carried us through to a comfortable victory. Airdrie opened in determined fashion but fell behind after McKeown brought Mixu Paatelainen down just outside the box. Eamonn Bannon curling free-kick took the slightest of deflections off the end man in the wall and beat Martin. Mixu Paatelainen had a shot and a header well saved by Martin as the two sides battled it out in typical cup tie fashion. Billy Thomson, on his return from injury, was, however, largely untroubled.
The second half opened with us attacking Airdrie down every avenue. Mixu Paatelainen set Ian Redford away down the middle but Ian's shot was wide of the target. Airdrie's best chance of the game came early in the second half but Billy Thomson saved Parlane's screwed shot in acrobatic fashion. Martin then produced a couple of outstanding saves. Firstly from Hamish French's !lick on of a Mixu header and then from Mixu himself when the Airdrie keeper not only saved but held a powerful header by the Finn. Another Eamonn Bannon free-kick brought the goal that clinched our quarter final spot. Maurice Malpas was fouled by Moore with 15 minutes left and Eamonn's lofted free kick was headed strongly past Martin by Paul Hegarty from close in. Immediately Airdrie hit back with Lindsay and Hughes both testing Billy Thomson who pulled off two fine saves. In the final minute McCabe looked certain to pull a goal back but Billy Thomson tipped his effort over the bar.
