The uphill task in hand was hardly made easier by the absence of so many experienced players, but nonetheless the men in tangerine fought valiantly and were perhaps unlucky not take the tie into extra time. After getting what normally constitutes an excellent away result, we were left to reflect on what might have been had it not been for the below par performance in the first leg. After an even opening, we survived a narrow escape when Kadlec hit the post and Jim Mclnally cleared the second attempt off the line. In 35 minutes Eamonn Bannon saw the keeper fist away his volley. Two minutes later John Clark turned in a Billy McKinlay corner.
Three minutes after the interval lain Ferguson drove wide and was even closer with a diving header from a John Clark cross in the 53rd minute. The Czechs exerted some pressure on us after an hour and Billy Thomson pulled off a great save from Kadelec. However, in the 76th minute Billy was given no chance when Lubomir Vlk scored with a volley, despite our appeals for offside against several players. The goal itself didn't alter our objective, we still had to score twice. We stepped up the pressure and almost made it when Dave Bowman's last minute header struck the under-side of the bar, but was adjudged by the referee not to have crossed the line.
