Meetings between United and the Dons are akin to the irresistable meeting the immovable and the result always seems to be stalemate.
Even this cup-tie, in which both sides shrugged off their more studious approach to a new firm encounter, failed to separate the pair. Few could quibble that Aberdeen didn't deserve to take the lead in the 26th minute. Charlie Nicholas, whilst lying on the ground, somehow managed to find Robert Connor in space and the Dons midfielder hit a low grounder past Billy Thomson. As half-time approached we began to seize the initiative and McKimmie had to look lively to prevent Kevin Gallacher finishing off a fine move from a throw-in. A minute later Charlie Nicholas hit a free-kick which sneaked only inches past the post, but the half closed with us putting the Dons goal under pressure which augured well for the second period.
The second half was just 38 seconds old when we got an opportunity to hit back. Kevin Gallacher was tripped by Ian Robertson in the box, and Mixu Paatelainen stepped up to sweep home the penalty award to set up a rousing second period.
Jim Bett struck a low shot which Billy Thomson turned round the post shortly afterwards but that was the last time the Tannadice 'keeper was to be severely tested. Instead there was some unbelievable incidents around Snelders goal. Kevin Gallacher struck the outside of the far post when he got on the end of a Paul Hegarty back header from a long Dave Bowman throw. Mixu Paatelainen returned the ball into the middle, Hamish French flicked in and Paul Hegarty hammered the ball against the inside of the near post and this spell of bedlam ended with Jim Mclrially volleying over.
We certainly finished the match in good heart with Snelders denying Gary McGinnis on two occasions and Kevin Gallacher nodding over in between these two excellent efforts from the substitute, but the widely predicted outcome was proved correct.
