The woeful start to the season continued at Somerset Park with United's fifth consecutive defeat. That terrible run had led to manager Willie McFadyen tendering his resignation after nine years just prior to facing Ayr. However, at least, in this latest reversal the side displayed fighting qualities and never gave up. Johnny Coyle was home on leave from the army and he pepped up the attack, scoring our only goal with a neat overhead kick. Once again, Alec Edmiston performed heroics in goal but failed to prevent Ayr getting the goals that gave them their second victory of the season over United.
