Dundee United dared the Ibrox lion in his lair, and have him quite a good shaking up. In an interesting struggle, watched by close on 20,000 people, they were beaten by two goals, one in each half, but for one and all there was something of a handshake for a grim fight against heavy odds. No one can doubt the weight of the opposition. Rangers' front formation brought back memories of a bygone day of glory.
The lads from Tannadice simply let that bygone be bygone, revealed nothing of the "nervy" business in their work, and saw to it that their adversaries in light blue, particularly the fair-haired Andy and demon-for-work Cairns, did not have too long to think over the moves that made that front line of old a thing to be feared.
