Match Report

United played the final game of the Irish pre season trip against Bohemian FC at Dalymount Park and ended the tour unbeaten after a 1-1 draw.

With only three minutes on the clock, United had a great chance to go ahead when John Rankin was put through one on one with the Bohemians goalkeeper however the United man’s lobbed effort drifted past the left hand post. The visiting Arabs didn’t have long to wait to cheer a United goal. In the tenth minute a clever worked corner kick saw Willo Flood find the right boot of Jon Daly and although his driven effort was blocked on the line by a defender the ball spun up in the air and landed perfectly for Garry Kenneth to blast into the roof of the net.

United continued to dominate and Goodwillie was next to go close with a 25 yard effort which just cleared the Bohemians left hand post, after some nice build up play between Rankin and Goodwillie. With 34 minutes on the clock a beautiful cross field 40 yard pass from Paul Dixon found Jon Daly on the edge of the 18 yard area but the striker’s deft lobbed effort was held by the Bohemians trialist goalkeeper.

Two minutes into the second half and some more good link up play between Daly and Goodwillie saw Scott Robertson teed up for a 20 yard drive but his well struck effort was saved by the goalkeeper. With fifty minutes on the clock, Bohemians threatened the United goal for the first time. Brennan’s 30 yard effort was well struck but was always heading wide of Mentel’s goalpost. If the warning signs were there, they were proved correct as Bohemians levelled the score line in the 56th minute. Scott Robertson’s attempted pass back to Mentel lacked the desired pace and Gary Burke was able to nip in and lob the ball over the goalkeeper and into the United net.

Bohemians were really starting to take a stranglehold in the game as the United players tired from the demands of the twice a day training sessions they have faced over in Dublin and from a 20 yard free kick, Christopher Fagan was unlucky to see his effort cannon back off the bar.

United almost clinched victory in the 88th minute after good work down the left by Mackay-Stevens saw Johnny Russell presented with the opportunity to shoot from 15 yards but just as he shaped to shoot, the ball bobbled and Russell could only succeed in playing the ball up onto his arm and the chance was gone.
