Match Report

United had settled into the 3-5-2 formation during the pre-season and returned home to Scotland to face Airdrie United away from home. A level first half had served up a no goals for either side.

With four minutes gone, in the first half, Derek McInnes, Barry Robson and Alan Archibald combined well for the latter to flight a cross that Billy Dodds met with a header into the far corner. The second goal came five minutes later after Charlie Miller was brought down twenty yards out. Danny Griffin lined up to take the free kick but instead Derek McInnes fired into the net as the Airdrie players were still lining up the wall.

United continued to dominate and with 71 minutes gone, the Tangerines netted number three. The referee awarded an indirect free kick on the left of the six-yard line and, with the defence ready to rush out, Miller calmly passed wide to Mark Kerr on the right and he lashed the ball high into the net. Owen Coyle then headed home a Jim Paterson corner on 78 minutes. Finally, Jason Scotland won the ball in the Airdrie half and went on a mazy run, he ghosted past three defenders before slotting past the keeper for the last and best of the afternoon.
