Match Report

Our unbeaten run of six matches which had begun after a defeat at McDiarmid Park floundered at the hands of St Johnstone to make it an unhappy start to the New Year. One man who didn't herald in 1993 was skipper Maurice Malpas as he sat out his first match in over two and a half years. Billy McKinlay was our star performer in midfield and he almost gave us an early lead, but his lob was just off target. Soon afterwards he forced a fine save from Rhodes. Saints served early notice from where their threat would come when Curran found Davies in space, but his shot flew over the bar. We were not so fortunate a couple of minutes before the interval. Once more John Davies found himself in acres of space and this time he steered the ball into the far comer.

Shots positively rained in on Rhodes in the second period and the inevitable equaliser duly arrived when Scott Crabbe collected the ball on the edge of the box and drifted right to escape his marker before hammering home a shot from the edge of the box. But as in the first period, Saints sneaked away to pinch a second goal when Paul Wright took control of an Inglis free-kick and wheeled to shoot low past Alan Main. Only eight minutes remained and although Saints had to defend desperately, they emerged victors from a match which we totally dominated.
