Match Report

With the remembrance of their Consolation Cup tie defeat still fresh in their minds, Montrose travelled through to Dundee to meet the Hibs at Tannadice Park with the double intention of taking their revenge and improving their prospects of having their name inscribed on the Forfarshire Cup. The Gable Endies, however, were doomed to disappointment, for they had to acknowledge defeat - and a humiliating defeat it was - by four goals to nil.

The Montrose officials, displeased with their club's recent performances, shuffled the players about, but all I can say is that, the sooner the men are shuffled back to where they were before, the better for the prospects of the club.

Montrose had the advantage of a good breeze in the opening half, but they made little use of it. There was absolutely no use in running in close with the ball with the wind so favourable. The breeze was going straight down the field, and considering that the goalie and a dazzling sun to discomfort him the policy was undoubtedly to shoot, and to shoot often, and from any range. Such methods would assuredly have brought success, but the Gable Endies had a neat little way of their own, but it didn't bring them goals. The best they could do was to gain a penalty, which Timmons cleared in splendid style. On play in the opening forty-five, Montrose should have been at least one goal up, but they crossed over with nothing done, and it was pretty obvious that Hibs would, with the wind in their favour, overcome the opposition.

There was little of a contest after the crossover. The home forwards, who were well supplied with the ball by their midline men, were ever troublesome, and it was not long before the first score came, Loney putting through as the result of the corner. Graham, however, had the honour of securing the best goal of the day, heading in beautifully from a corner. He soon followed with another, and when Collins notched the fourth the game was won and lost. The Irishmen should really have been awarded a fifth goal, the ball striking the roof of the net and coming out again, but what does that matter?

Dunnian made his initial appearance in Dundee, and he played well. He parts with the ball to good advantage, and his corner kicking was splendid. He and Graham formed the best wing on the field. Hibs' defence was strong, altogether too strong for the visitors, but Montrose went the wrong way about for making progress. Timmons was alert in the first half, but in the second portion, with the exception of one solitary raid, he had a picnic. Montrose's backs saved their side from a heavier defeat.
