Territorialty, we dominated this match from the first whistle and even before taking an early lead, we had been unlucky not to score when Michael O'Neill's corner fell to Billy McKinlay on the edge of the box and his swerving volley crashed off the middle of the cross bar. A goal, however, was only temporarily delayed. Two minutes later, Scott Crabbe sent over an inviting cross which Duncan Ferguson headed powerfully past Mathers from six yards.Only Duffy's intervention in the 19th minute prevented us going further ahead when he popped up to clear Paddy Connolly's shot after the United striker had rounded the Dundee keeper.
John Clark sent a free kick crashing just over as we tried to re-assert our earlier dominance, but despite failing to achieve this we still had chances to remove any doubt about the destination of the points. Mathers' legs kept out a Duncan Ferguson shot after Paddy Connolly had released the big" striker. Another glaring opportunity went a begging with a little over quarter of an hour remaining when Maurice Malpas sent Paddy Connolly clear, but again the lower anatomy of Mathers came to Dundee"s rescue. So in the end we had to be content with the narrowest of victories which didn't fully satisfy Manager Jim McLean as his post match comment clearly illustrated. "Too many players thought it was all over after we scored."
