After five successive games unchanged, injury enforced a couple of changes in the United line-up. Dave Bowman and Dave Narey failed to recover from knocks and Jim Mclnally and Brian Welsh were drafted into the side. Relegation threatened Motherwell's intention was clear from the start - they were here to frustrate. Unfortunately, they returned to Fir Park with their mission accomplished. Yet it might have been very different had Dykstra not denied Paddy Connolly after he seized on a poorly directed McCart header. On the half hour mark the Dutch keeper tipped over a Scott Crabbe shot on the turn and even when he was beaten, Martin was on the line to turn away a Jim McInally effort.
United's frustration continued into the second half when finding a way through proved even more problematical. The limit of Motherwell's attacking ambitions can be no better illustrated by the fact that an Ian Angus shot straight at Alan Main was their direct shot on target all evening. Whilst Motherwell were delighted at securing a point in their climb away from the relegation zone, this was a blow to our quest to return to the European arena.
