Play raged from end to end right from the off, but we fell behind to what only can be described as a bizarre goal. In attempting to clear, skipper Maurice Malpas knocked the ball straight up in the air. Nicholas failed to control it when it came to ground and the ball ran loose to Frank McAvennie who squeezed it home.
Although we made a good start to the second period, Celtic forged further in front when Wdowczyk curled over a free kick from which Mike Galloway scored. Seven minutes later we got a foot back in the door when Duncan Ferguson touched on a free kick from John dark and Paddy Connolly stole in. But Celtic effectively put the match beyond our reach when McAvennie broke clear from the halfway line and slipped the ball inside for John Collins. United did fight to the bitter end. McNally cleared a Duncan Ferguson header off the line and our persistence was rewarded in the last minute when Duncan Ferguson headed home a Paddy Connolly cross. That last goal had the effect of putting a better complexion on a result which seriously damaged our hopes of regaining a place in Europe.
