When this match went ahead three days after being washed out the previous Saturday, it didn't go anything like according to plan as Hibs recorded what was only their fourth Premier victory in 34 attempts and to say the defeat, and particularly the margin, was disappointing, would be a gross under-statement. Yet things got off on an optimistic note with the keeper twice making saves from Christian Dailly. However, the warning bells in United's defence were first sounded when Wright sprinted clear, but Guide van de Kamp, playing his only game of the season, denied the Hibs' striker. He did likewise to keep out a Darren Jackson effort as large gaps appeared in the Tangerines rearguard. After another good save, this time from Weir, Guido finally had to admit defeat when Keith Wright pounced on an Evans pass to slot in goal number one of his hat-trick.
Although United did have their chances, two goals within the space of seven minutes well and truly killed off any hopes of a possible recovery. First Keith Wright ran through on to a McGinlay chip to score and then the Keith Wright scored at the second attempt after the ball ran kindly for him after his first shot had been blocked. At the time this result which left us trailing Hearts by two points and with the Tynecastle men having two games in hand, our European ambitions looked in tatters. Little wonder Manager Jim McLean was in irate mood after the poor showing. "I was ashamed to be associated with that performance," he said.
