Match Report

Dundee United arrived at Bayview for the second leg of their Fife pre-season double. East Fife made changes from the side which beat Gateshead on Saturday, bringing in Ken Mackie at centre instead of John Huskie. Hegarty took the left wing berth from the start in stead of Herd. United had reserve 'keeper Andy Grham on duty. Gordon Wallace was sidelined with a sore knee and Ralph Milne was on the subs bench.

East Fife made the early running but it was United who got the first effort on goal. In 10 minutes Payne broke clear from the left flank but gave Blair no problems with a waist high shot. In 12 minutes a swerving Rennie shot from 25 yards did test the 'keeper, but the goal came at the other end three minutes later. A cross from Berry found Kevin Hegarty unmarked and he smashed a high shot past the 'keeper. In 19 minutes a rising drive from ex-Celt Gibson tested Graham, then at the other end Payne shot wide from a free kick 20 yards out. As the interval approached, Fleming got a boot to a Payne cross but the ball was blocked by a wall of defenders.

After the break East Fife substituted Huskie and MacIvor for Mackie and Gibson. Blair did well to save a 20-yard drive from Payne. 10 minutes after the restart, Dodds hooked a corner kick into the box high over the bar. Then Sturrock put in a rasper from 20 yards that Blair parried. Kevin Hegarty nearly scored at the other end, when Graham could only block his angled drive and his shot from the rebound was scrambled clear by Stewart. In 62 minutes Kirkwood came on for Holt. United took over as the game got into the latter stages. In 67 minutes Blair had to go full length to tip past an Addison drive. United had the Fifers pinned back but were unable to convert that all important chance. Sturrock came closest with just 2 minutes left and Blair saved spectacularly as the winger broke clear.
