After the previous match with Stenhousemuir where United fielded a mainly reserve team, the first team players were back in action in Dumfries for their friendly with Queen of the South.
The Tannadice side started well and it looked as if they had found their shooting boots when Robinson scraped the bar with a tremendous drive after good work by Payne and Sturrock. A minute later, a Sturrock header sailed narrowly over. George Dickson relieved the pressure for Queen's with a 40 yard run but his parting shot caused Hamish McAlpine no trouble. Robinson and Sturrock were combing well for United and from a Robinson pass, Narey sent a 25 yard thunderbolt only a foot wide. Ball brilliantly held a Milne shot and then turned a Fleming effort round the post. It was mostly one-way traffic but from a Pollock pass, Peter Dickson shot inches wide with McAlpine beaten. United's speed troubled Queen's and Thorburn was booked for bringing down Robinson.
United in an effort to get on target in the second half, exerted tremendous pressure and Milne should have done better that shoot weakly into Ball's arms from 8 yards. Jim McLean replaced Payne and Milne with Addison and Kirkwood but United still found it difficult to get the right blend and they were shocked when new boy Matt Pollock shot Queen's into the lead in the 61st minute. Dodds came on for Smith in United's next reshuffle and with five minutes left Derek Addison equalised with a shot which went in via the upright. Then in the last minute, Billy Kirkwood got the winner from a Sturrock cross.
