Match Report

With Paul Hegarty unfit, United fielded young Derek Stark at No. 5 for this Forfarshire Cup tie.

There was not much action in the opening stages, as both teams settled into the lush Tannadice turf. A penalty appeal from Montrose in the ninth minute when Miller went down under a Robinson tackle was refused. Then the same Miller went close to giving away a penalty at the other end with an unorthodox tackle on Sturrock. Montrose were holding their own in a niggly game with plenty of fouls. A McIntosh free kick from the right found Murray's head and the ball flew past McAlpine's post. In 18 minutes Brian D'Arcy was booked for a foul on Addison, and as the petty fouling continued Sturrocks name was also noted for a foul on Miller seven minutes later. Things hotted up on the half hour mark. Though hireling after a Johnston tackle, Payne sent through a great ball for the on rushing Kirkwood. Barr tackled hard, and another penalty claim went unheeded. The best chance of the first half fell to Montrose's Livingstone, six minutes from half time. Clean through and just a few yards out, he shot wide. Then Addison hit the bar from another good Payne pass.

After the restart, United heaped on the pressure. Sturrock had a good opening in the 56th minute, provided by Payne through ball but the striker shot too hurriedly and wide. A Holt header from a Stark cross was nearer the target but Gorman in goal got a touch and Dennis D'Arcy completed the clearance. Livingstone took a knock and was replaced by Robb in 68 minutes. A minute later United for the breakthrough that had been threatening all the second period. Robinson, crossing from the right, put the ball on to Ray Stewart's head, and it was a winner all the way. The rampant tangerines almost made it two in two minutes, as Robinson saw a 'cert' deflected past at the last gasp. Kirkwood was last to threaten when he forced Gorman into a great save.
