Match Report

With the weekends Premier Division fixture against Hearts called off well in advance, United arranged a friendly with Arbroath at Gayfield. Of the three United players announced in Jock Stein's Scotland pools, Dave Narey and Ray Stewart were included in the United squad, with Paul Hegarty being rested. Both United and Arbroath fielded almost full strength sides, and the 1,500 fans were given a treat with free admission.

In a fast open game there were half chances at either end, with Graeme Payne's headed effort the closest to being a goal in the opening 20th minute, with McKenzie clearing off the line. A brilliant move by United almost brought the opener, with Stewart chesting down a Kopel crossfield pass, and hitting the ball just inches wide. United took the lead in the 37th minute, when a long, searching ball from Stewart caught the home defence leaden footed, and Paul Sturrock was on to it in a flash to hammer the ball high into the net.

Both teams made changes for the second half, and with Arbroath on the attack, Gavine had two early efforts, with McAlpine saving one and the other narrowly over the bar. Lister pushed a low Sturrock shot past, and the home side had a great chance when Fletcher chose to volley instead of controlling and taking on McAlpine. In the 72nd minute Paul Sturrock grabbed his and United's second goal, when a long throw by Kopel was backheaded by Dodds and Sturrock's shot was held by the keeper, who then unluckily dropped the ball behind him and over the line. With eight minutes to go Arbroath defender Derek Rylance had the misfortune of clipping the ball wide of his own keeper and into the net. A good run out for United, who hoped that their clash with Rangers at Ibrox the following weekend would beat the weather.
