Match Report

In a stirring opening match to their Japan Cup quest, United drew 2-2 with the Argentinians of San Lorenzo in Kyoto. The tangerines had to come from behind, for they were two goals down in the first 20 minutes, Hugo Coscia and Claudio Marangini doing the damage.

The result itself was a bit of a travesty with McAlpine rarely tested in the entire match. However, United showed great desire to recover from a two goal deficit. A short pass back gifted United their first, and Graeme Payne took advantage to pull one back. The Tannadice party weren't pleased with some of the tactics of the Argentinians. After Payne had knocked off one of the goals, before half time, the equaliser came from the penalty spot in the second half. The award caused uproar in the San Lorenzo side even although it was a blatant handling offence. They held up the game for a long spell, arguing, jostling, and even kicking a deep hole in the penalty spot. But finally Ray Stewart was allowed to take the kick and fired United level. Man of the match was Derek Stark, deputising for Paul Hegarty at centre-half. Graeme Payne was also impressive.
