Not only was this the final match of he season, but it also marked the end of Jim McLean's remarkable twenty one and a half years as United's manager.
Aberdeen drew first blood after only four minutes through Scott Booth but that lead was short-lived. Two minutes later, a corner was only cleared to Dave Bowman on the right and he drilled in a hard and low cross which Christian Dailly diverted high into the net. On a rain affected surface both sides went hammer and tongs for goals with United just shading the opening half, ending it by forcing a series of corners.
The game appeared to be going nowhere in particular when Aberdeen took the lead 21 minutes into the second half. Andy Gibson wriggled clear of the United defence to slot home Booth's through ball. Two minutes later Scott Booth himself broke clear to score in similar fashion to Gibson. Last time Aberdeen had been at Tannadice we had staged a two goal recovery, but frankly, there was no chance of a repeat this time and the visitors added a fourth in the dying minutes when Brian Grant headed a Booth cross in from close range to complete an emphatic victory and end Jim McLean's era on a disappointing note.
