Match Report

Newspaper extract from Dundee Courier.

A hat-trick by centre-forward Peter McKay helped Dundee United to a comfortable win in the 1947-48 Forfarshire Cup final at Dens Park yesterday. It is the first time United have won the trophy since season 1929-30. The Tannadice wing-halves, Dickson and Court, took command from the start, and the attack was always dangerous. In comparison, the Arbroath front five were weak in front of goal. They played too closely and were reluctant to shoot. Ross, at centre was blotted out by Duncan Ogilvie. United opened the scoring on fourteen minutes, when Pacione chased a lone pass from McKay, and shot past the advancing McGraw, with Arbroath appealing for offside. Main Arbroath danger this stage came from the right, but McGraw was the busier keeper. Arbroath almost got the equaliser when Jardine made a faulty pass back. Boyd dived on the ball just as Ross came tearing in. two minutes before half-time, McKay put United two up. He rounded McCall and went to beat McGraw with angular drive.

United kept up the pressure after the interval and the best goal of the match came after 53 minutes. A neat slip by Ouchterlonie put McKay away and he smashed a 25-yarder into the bottom corner of the net. Arbroath fought back strongly, but it was United who scored again nine minutes later. McKay notched his hat-trick with a sap-shot following a cross from Cruickshank. Four minutes later, Smart handled in the penalty box and Ross netted foror Arbroath from the spot. Next minute McKay was clean through again, but after drawing the keeper the centre hit the post. In the last minute, Arbroath were awarded another penalty for a Smart tackle on McEwan, but Ross shot straight at Boyd. Provost Powrie presented the cup to the United captain Duncan Ogilvie.
