Match Report

Dundee United entered the second round of the Scottish Cup at a complacent ambling pace. Their fourteen goals came as a matter of course. Nithsdale were hopelessly outclassed, and about eight hundred spectators wondered where the cup tie element came in.

Only five minutes were required to set the Nithsdale defence guessing, and Kay took the opportunity to open the scoring. Then Williamson set about scoring give goals with head and foot. With Bain and Harley he brought the Tannadice total up to seven for the first half.

In the second period Nithsdale had a stiffish breeze in their favour, and were able to give Goalkeeper McCallum a visit once or twice. Otherwise history repeated itself, United helping themselves to seven more goals throughout the following:- Williamson, Cameron, McCallum (2), Bain (2) and Kay. Towards the end McCallum had taken up the centre-forward berth and was making efforts to secure his 'hat-trick' a feat which Bain and Williamson both accomplished.

Nithsdale were a plucky enough lot, but for the most part seemed to be bewildered. In extenuation it might be mentioned that they were without the services of Adamson for sometime during the first half. The centre had to retire with a cut above the eye, and took over the right wing berth on his return. John Frew and Cunningham were the best of the forwards, and Cree put in some serviceable work at left half.
