Aberdeen, whose record at Tannadice, is unsurpassed by anyone, succeeded yet again in uplifting both points on offer in the first New Firm meeting of the season.
Depleted as they were through injuries, the Dons did manage to field one of their walking wounded with Eric Black returning to the side, and the returning striker proved Aberdeen's match winner.
United started well enough but fell behind when Billy Thomson brought down his former St Mirren team-mate, Frank McDougall after a defensive error had given him a clear run-in on goal. The Dons midfield had a stranglehold on the game for most of the first half with United rarely posing a threat to Leighton.
John Holt took the place of the injured Stuart Beedie at the restart and United then dominated proceedings. Chances came and went, but despite almost total domination couldn't grab an equaliser. To rub salt in the wound, Frank McDougall broke away in the dying seconds and his shot was saved by Billy Thompson, but Eric Black followed up to score, giving the final scoreline a somewhat flattering look in Dons favour.
