United slithered to defeat for the first time since mid October, and the conditions were almost entirely attributable to the slippery pitch.
For most of the first half, both sets of players tried to come to terms with the surface which was soft on top. but bone-hard underneath. The nearest United came to scoring followed a fine run by Stuart Beedie, but Money blocked his final effort.
Ironically, Saints' late winner was scored at a time when United were enjoying their best period. Gardiner Spiers was the architect of Saints' goal. His cross from left to right found Jim Rooney and his header, combined with the conditions, deceived Hamish McAlpine.
