Match Report

Tradition told at Dundee. United always grand cup-fighters, forgot their manifold failings of recent weeks and handed out the biggest hammering given to a visiting team in Dundee for many moons. Saints will have to improve immensely if they are to have a chance in the second leg.

Jimmy Simpson and veteran Fordyce saw the homesters through a sticky twenty minutes at the start, and the rest was easy. A penalty award rattled Saints, and defenders mistakes helped United to pile on a four goal lead before the interval.

Juliussens double hat trick was a grand performance. He hit the ball with terrific force, and although Matthews got his hands on the last two shots he couldn't keep them out.

Even the penalty goal was really the property of the big Englishman. He was storming through when a defender grasped him, and Watson scored from the spot.

The wing halves and inside forwards improved enormously on recent weeks, although another marksman would be handy just in case Juliussen found himself blotted out some day.

Saints took the risk in fielding Wood, badly injured in the league game between the teams a few weeks ago. It didn't come off as shown in Juliussens scoring exploits.

An injury to centre forward J Wilkie didn't help matters although the players appeared to make a good recovery after the interval.

In point of football there was little between the sides but United carried the finishing power.
