1 - 1
Supplementary Cup (Semi Final 2nd Leg)
Albert Juliussen (75)
G.Mitchell (Falkirk) (Referee)
East Fife really won this tie for United.
For most of the second leg they were on top. That goals did not come their way was not for lack of chances. Rank bad finishing finished the Fifers' chance of appearing in the final.
In the first half exchanges were exciting enough, and both defences were kept on edge. Mooney, Airdrie, had brisk exchanges with Ross, but the winger was showing a profit for the Fife team. From a free kick he banged the ball with such power that , whilst Brownlie saved, Younger was able to snap at the ball and East Fife were leading after ten minutes.
The crowd had thrills galore in the second half. The Fifers commenced a blitz, and safety first became the order of the day for United. Every Fife forward had his chance to score but the ball went anywhere except the net.
Play became a bit tousy, and at one time two Fife players were on the touchline for repairs.
Juliussen sealed the Fifers fate with a finely taken goal, heading home a corner by Ross.
The closing stages saw the Fifers do their upmost to retrieve the situation. Then Brownlies goal had a charmed life, what time time the Fifers missed a gilt edged chance.
Uniteds' middle line was good. Ross, Gardiner and Juliussen were smart on the ball.
The Fife team were not at their best. Mooney performed well for his new team, and Smellie and Sneddon were a tough proposition for the United forwards.
