United secured another two points in the race for promotion against Queen of the South with another odd goal win at Tannadice. The early stages of the game suggested that the men from Dumfries were set to run riot over the homesters, and after just four minutes, McCall had scored for the visitors. A series of back and forth attacks followed before United eventually found an equaliser; Duncan Hutchison with the goal two minutes before the break.
United started the second half better than they had the first, and just under a quarter hour in, they took the lead. Taking advantage of a penalty award, it was Dave Walker who netted from the spot to make it 2-1. A bonnie goal from Jacky Kay shortly after put United firmly in the driving seat, albeit in the face of a Queens side who were still showing grit and determination. A second for McCall with twelve minutes remaining gave rise to a Queens fightback, but as the final whistle arrived, there were to be no more goals, and United secured the victory thanks to resolute defending.
