All the goals arrived in the first half of this game, although United's win was far from assured in the early stages, up against a determined Dumbarton forward line. Facing the sun and a breeze, United were nervy early on and a series of ill judged passes saw the Sons of the Rock test the home defence. United rallied, however, and Duncan Hutchison sent home a cross from Geordie Henderson to make it 1-0. Hutchison scored a second shortly after, despite calls from the visiting team, claiming that the forward was offside when he received a pass from Harry Michie. In protest, the Dumbarton goalkeeper Jock Bradford refused to retrieve the ball from the back of the net, leaving the referee to do so himself!
United scored their third when a penalty was awarded for handball. Geordie Henderson
, earlier the provider, made no mistake with the spot kick, sending it neatly into the corner. Dumbarton's one and only goal came through McIsaac during a rocky spell at the back.
The second half saw United maintain their pressure as Dumbarton fell away and no further goals were scored. United 'keeper Harry McGregor was forced to withdraw for a quarter hour due to a cut above his eye and deputising temporarily was Johnny Hart, who did his level best but left Jimmy Brownlie's heart in his mouth on more than one occasion, his antics drawing more than a handful of laughs from spectators.
