United's third match in the capital within eight days failed to match the excitement of the Cup. Hibs, with more to play for than United, gained a valuable point in their fight against the drop. The Edinburgh side could have grabbed both points but that would have perhaps been an injustice as the best chances belonged to United.
Billy Kirkwood struck the cross-bar in the first half and Ralph Milne did likewise early in the second half, However, it was Hibs who went ahead when Willie Irvine got to the bye-line and his cross was nodded in by Gordon Durie. Alan Rough then denied Billy Kirkwood an equaliser but couldn't prevent Stuart Beedie hitting the equaliser when his first-timer from a Tom Coyne lay-off went just inside the near post.
