The main focus was on Danny Svvanson getting his first run of the season to put himself in the frame for the return leg with the Poles, coming through the opening half hour without any problems. However, by the time he came off, United's young team were two down.
Cowden struck in the first minute when Lewis Coult knocked the ball down to Marc McKenzie and he shot home from eight yards. Before United's kids could recover, they were 2-0 down after good work by Lee Makel and Mark Ramsay set up Coult, who fired home a low shot with just eight minutes gone. It was far from all one-way traffic though with United hitting back and home keeper Youssef Bejaoui had four excellent saves in quick succession to thwart efforts from Scott Allan, Ross Smith and Ryan Dow twice. However, it was Cowden who forged further in front three minutes from the interval, Lewis Milne was brought down in the box by Ryan Ferguson and Ramsay made no mistake from the penalty.
In a second half peppered by thunderstorms, the Blue Brazil grabbed a fourth on the hour when Ramsay put McKenzie through to round the keeper before firing home.
