Match Report

The Tannadice undersoil heating system atoned for its midweek malfunctioning to allow the Forfarshire final to be switched from frost bound Dens Park at the last minute. However. United. without World Cup stars Richard Gough and Maurice Malpas lost their grip on the County Cup Trophy after less than two months as Dundee's Tom Carson laid the foundations for a Clark Blue win with a string of fine first half saves.

After early pressure, United's first serious threat came when Carson turned a Davie Dodds shot round the post. Shortly afterwards he blocked another effort by the United striker with his feet in mid-air. More heroics by the Dundee 'keeper followed when he brilliantly tipped over a ferocious drive by Eamonn Bannon. From the resultant corner, Carson performed equally well again to tip over a header from Davie Dodds. However, on the stroke of half-time, Dundee took a shock lead. Billy Thomson failed to hold a cross by Brown from the right and Ross Jack headed in the loose bail.

There was a further set-back 12 minutes into the second period when John Holt brought down Bobby Connor and John Brown crashed in the penalty award. Boosted by that two goals the Dens men dominated most of the second half. In a final salvo United did manage a few goal attempts but the last serious action of the match encapsulated the major factor for the win, when Tom Carson produced yet another superlative save, pushing over a 20 yard first time drive by John Holt.
